Berkshire
County of southern England bounded by Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire
to the north, by Wiltshire to the west, by Hampshire to the south,
and by Surrey to the south-east. Berkshire is an unassuming county
with principal towns of Reading, the county town, Slough, Maidenhead,
Newbury, Bracknell, Wokingham and New Windsor. Windsor Castle is
the most noted building in the county. Covering an area of 1,256
square kilometres, the county's most widespread occupation is in
farming. The London to South Wales motorway (the M4) and railway
lines to the west, the south and the Midlands all cross Berkshire.
Crossing over the Thames is Eton and its famous public school, founded
by Henry VI in 1440.
