Cheshire
County of north-west England, bordering Wales and the Irish Sea,
and covering some 2,323 square kilometres. The southern and western
parts of the county consist of the Cheshire Plain. The first major
settlements of the county, however - hill forts and of Bronze and
Iron ages - were sited on the lightly wooded mid-Cheshire ridge.
The Romans established a fortress at Deva (Chester) in 71 AD as
a base for the attempted conquest of Wales. Cheshire has a highly
productive agriculture dominated by dairy farming. The majority
of the population, however, live in industrial towns such as Stockport
and Crewe, the latter serving as one of the most important rail
junctions in the country. Knutsford, with its black and white houses
and winding streets, is typical of the towns clustered in the region.
Known for its cats, its cheese, its excellent road and suprising
varied scenery, the county of Cheshire has retained its charming
rural character throughout the centuries.
