Dorset
A county of south-west England covering an area of 2,654 square
kilometres and home to some of the most beautiful gardens in the
country. Dorset is divided into eight districts: Bournemouth, Christchurch,
East Dorset, North Dorset, Poole, Purbeck, West Dorset and Weymouth
and Portland. The county town, Dorchester, is still recognized as
the backdrop for Thomas Hardy's novel "The Mayor of Casterbridge".
The high street is lined with 17th Century and Georgian houses.
Indeed the town itself has a wonderful feel to it, with many small
and friendly places to eat. At Lyme Regis, which is at Dorset's
western point, there are impressive cliffs which are famous to fossil
collectors the world over.
