Isle
of Wight
The Isle of Wight is an island off the south coast of England covering
just 381 square kilometeres. It is an extremely popular destination
with a magnificent landscape complemented by some unique scenery
such as the stunning Needles. The island lies at the entrance to
Southampton Water and is separated from the mainland by the Solent.
The old capital of Carisbrooke is home to the 11th Century Norman
castle where Charles I was imprisoned in 1647. Popular resorts on
the island are Sandown, Shanklin and Newport, all renowned for their
golden beaches. The Isle of Wight is also a famous base for sailing,
with the big highlight of the sailing calendar being Cowes Week.
