County Down
The main feature of County Down is the rich, rolling green countryside,
with its famous "Drumlin" hills. It is located on the north-east coast
of Northern Ireland, looking out over the Irish Sea towards the Isle
of Man, and stretches south from Belfast to Carlingford Lough. In
the northern part of the county Strangford Lough is a noted bird sanctuary,
and to the south the beautiful Mountains of Mourne "sweep down to
the sea". The county covers almost 2,500 square kilometres and the
ports of Ardglass, Portavogie and Kilkeel form the core of Northern
Ireland's fishing industry. The ancient county town is Downpatrick
- where the remains of St. Patrick are reputed to have been buried
1,500 years ago - in the grounds of the Cathedral. The coastal town
of Newcastle is one of Northern Ireland's main holiday resorts.
